What is DoorDash, and What is it Like to Become a Driver?
Think you want to become a DoorDash driver? I will tell you all you need to know to maximize your success with the company.
Doordash is a company, sort of like UberEats. They provide a platform for contractors/drivers to sign up, and use their personal vehicle, to pick up and deliver take out. They just expanded in the recent years to deliver products from convenient stores such as Walgreens and CVS.
When you sign up with Doordash, you become a sub-contractor for them. You will accept their policy and guidelines, in exchange for the ability to participate in the make money program. You might find that you like working with DoorDash, I did it for a few months and enjoyed it.
I feel like the company took a turn in it’s pay structure, although I don’t have any proof to support that. It’s just my personal opinion from my own experience. I will touch more on that later.
How Much Does Doordash Pay?
This is a mystery! I can tell you that technically, they pay a base pay, which can be anywhere from $2-$10 per trip, depending on distance, time of day, and other factors. As I mentioned, recently, that pay has been not so great, to say the least. I mean, you can manage to earn at least $9/hour after it’s all said and done.
I am stating that from my personal experience. After expenses, such as gas, that is what I earned in the most recent times (2021). I am not including wear and tear on your vehicle, but trust that it will happen. Suspension components will wear out, brakes, tires, etc.
Then they advertise 100% tips go to the driver. I take that as an insult of my intelligence. Is there any company out there, that takes a portion of their drivers tips. Come on! Anyway, as you can imagine, some people are cheap, and some are generous. Personally, I like to tip my driver around 10% of my order.
Do you have DoorDash on your personal phone for takeout? Consider using my link to download the app, and create a free account. Here it is: Referral Link. Both of us will earn bonus credit to use towards our next order. Thank you, if you choose to use my link!
Keep in mind, what I mentioned about tips, is already included in what I mentioned earlier about the $9/hour in my personal experience. You might be able to earn more! This all depends on the time of day you choose to deliver, the draw of the delivery (which driver gets the order), the size of the order, and the generosity of the customer.
What Does a Day Look Like for a DoorDash Driver?
It’s pretty cool, I mean the flexibility is amazing. You can pretty much choose whenever you want to go out and Dash (slang for drive). You just have to look for the times that are high in demand to Dash Now (term used to get on the app and drive). Or you can schedule your Dash. The app is pretty user friendly, but if you don’t know how to use their app, here is a video explaining all the details:
When you do finally go out and Dash, you will need to make sure you have your red card (a debit card supplied by DoorDash), your hot/cold bag (also supplied by them upon registering), and enough gas in your car. Trust me, make sure you have enough gas, before you start. It is no fun looking for a gas station in between Dashes.
Then you just open the app and start Dashing! As I mentioned earlier, the app is so user friendly. You really should not have any issues driving for them. It literally walks you through every step. From pushing the “Dash Now” button, to receiving your first order, to taking you to the restaurant, picking up your order, and finally delivering your order.
It is basically a food delivery driver position. They recently added grocery pick up at convenient stores such as CVS and Walgreens, so you will go in there and actually shop for the items. This type of order can get typically tedious, but in my experience has always paid well.
My Pet Peeves About Doordash
They don’t pay wait time. If you get stuck in the restaurant, because the order is not ready, they are not paying you. This is so aggravating! Not like UberEats, at least they pay you, for wait time.
I have spoken to DoorDash Support about it. That’s another thing, their support team is not helpful at all. Unlike UberEats, they are extremely helpful. As you can tell, I like UberEats better. Overall I feel like they offer a better service to the driver.
Their pay is not up to par with the rest of the industry. You are basically depending on tips, and those are so unpredictable. I have complained to them about that as well, and as you can imagine, again their support team was not helpful at all.
It’s almost like they don’t care. I did not feel valuable to them. I mean, you are using your own car, taking care of their customers, and I just don’t feel appreciated by them. However, if you need to make some quick money, then the app and opportunity can be very useful.
How to Earn Extra Money and Maximize Your Earnings with Doordash
Before I forget, please consider using my referral link to register with DoorDash if you decide to drive with them. Here is my link: (coming soon). We should both get a bonus should you decide to drive. Thank you very much for your support, should you choose to use my link. 🙂
1. This very method of spreading the word, either by social media, blog, word of mouth, going through your contacts on your phone, etc. You can share a referral link and earn extra money for doing so.
In order to earn, the driver has to create an account and actually drive. There is more on the referral program right on their website here – link coming soon.
2. Learn when are their peak times to Dash. They usually offer extra money such as $1-$5 extra per dash during peak hours. These times usually fluctuate during rush hours. For example, lunch time, dinner time, and late night (9 pm -12 am)
3. Start a blog, such as this one. Would you like to learn how to build a website, in a simple 3 step process? I can help you with it. There is a free website building platform that offers free training, to help you get up and running. It is called Wealthy Affiliate. Here is my full review of their website here.
Also consider, creating a video, and putting your referral link in the comments. YouTube videos are more popular than ever. It is not hard to learn how to upload a video. I feel pretty confident you will get viewers. So long as your content is helpful.
4. Be punctual and extra nice to your customers. Show them that you care. Go the extra mile. Be creative. Maybe add something nice to their order, like a thank you note. Tell them you appreciate them, and would appreciate their 5 star review.
I haven’t noticed that reviews really matter, in terms of earning you extra money. However, I do believe if you have very low rating reviews, that may cause termination of using their app. Nevertheless, it communicates to your customers that you are really trying to provide excellent service to them, and that you are not just a driver.
Have You Ever Thought About Starting an Online Business? – Final Thoughts About DoorDash and Personal Recommendation
Sure, you could drive for DoorDash, and sure you could earn some extra money while doing it. Will it be worth it? Maybe not. You have to consider the wear and tear on your vehicle. Car repairs are not cheap.
Are you going to be doing it full time? Then maybe, it could make ends meet. I would do it, if I had no other options. Shoot for a period of time, I did Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, UberEats, and Amazon Flex. I was self employed, and sub-contracted with all of them. I still am until this day, however, I am not active at it. I am focusing on my online business at the present time.
If you are just looking for something to earn extra money part time, consider starting an online business. Despite of what you might of heard, making money online is a real thing. People are making $10,000s online. There is a way to do it.
I could explain it all in detail here, but it would just take too long. You can check out this course lesson and video by clicking on the image below:
I cannot stress it enough to you, this is not a get rich quick scheme. Neither is DoorDash, but if you want to build an online business, a sustainable business, doing business on your own terms, you can build a money machine that will dish out money for years to come. It will take work, dedication, and time.
It does not cost much to run an online business. I pay something like $25/per month to manage my business. Really. Coming from a brick and mortar business, where I was spending over $1,000 a month on overhead, this can be a way better option for you.
The place I mentioned earlier, Wealthy Affiliate, you can create a free membership, and they will walk you through building your business step by step. Check out my full review about it here.
