Many moons ago, I went into Google, and I entered the phrase “how do I choose a career” into the search field. Oh my goodness, it made my problem worse! It was a cat and mouse chase.
Please do not waste your time. Everywhere I looked, they came up with some 5 step process. Which I followed to the T, only to have to do more research, and more research.
Please! Maybe it’s not for me. Maybe it’s not for you either! Let me help you save some time, energy, and the headache. Allow me to make a suggestion.
Become a Content Creator. I will get into what this is, but promise me one thing, that you will keep an open mind.
I spent months looking into this, “how to choose a career” path in Google, and I do not want you to make the same mistake. Needless to say, it led to a Dead End.
Why Should I Choose Content Creation?
I guess first we need to discuss, what is content creation. You reading this article, is a product of content creation. I, the creator, created this content. And guess what, ALL the content on the internet was created by someone.
I don’t know about you, but the internet is the biggest place to work at, and I would love to work at a place like this. Would you? Really, all the videos, all the articles, all the information is a form of content.
With all this content on the internet, there needs to be someone to create it. To write that article, publish that information, or film that video. We are a bunch of Content Creators on the internet.
The Internet Has Grown So Much in the Past Couple of Decades!
Did you know that there are over 4 billion people online these days? Seriously. That is more than half the world’s population.
Statistics show, for the US, that 90% of business are selling there products online. This leads to monetization, which I go into further details later on in this blog post.
The American Dream Has Changed; Somewhat.
So we still want that big house, the nice car, and to vacation around the world. But the vehicle in which we choose to get us there is changing.
Before it was: go to work with a big company, spend 20-30 years there, then retire with a pension. That is no longer the case. Pensions are becoming a thing of the past.
There are more people starting businesses than ever. However, a brick and mortar business, costs way too much money! You could spend $10,000s on an offline business. Who has that type of money?
Plus the opportunity is limited. You are limited to your surroundings. I started a business offline once, and lost a ton.
The overhead online, is much lesser. You can own and operate a website for around $1 a day. And websites are not hard at all to build these days. You don’t need to know any code, it really is all like plug-and-play.
One of the greatest things about owning a business online, is that you get to make your own hours, and you can plug into just about anywhere with an internet connection.
It really does not get any better. Now it’s not that easy either, it takes work. Just like anything else. I mean you can go to college for 4 years and spend $10,000s, or you can start an online business for free. I will tell you how to get started in the next section.
Furthermore, you will spend all that money on your education, when you can learn how to operate your online business at a fraction of the cost. Come four years time, you will probably be making more online than you would in the career you chose. I know many online Content Creators making a six figure income.
Where can I get started?
I stumbled on this online community/platform many years ago, it’s called Wealthy Affiliate. WA will teach you how to build a website, in like 30 seconds, then teach you how to build a solid foundation for your webstie. So that it can run efficiently for years to come.
The Starter Membership is free, and will give you enough to get your feet wet. Basically launch your website, and give you the framework. More than likely you will want to continue becoming proficient within your business, so then you can look at premium options.
You can still make money in the Starter Membership, but it just not logical to continue on for free. As you know, there is no where in the world where you can operate a business for free.
You will need to invest into it. However, it is at your own pace. Put into it what you want. Go at your own pace.
Wealthy Affiliate teaches two ways of making money online with your website. Either by paid ads, or affiliate marketing, or both. There are a lot of opportunities. You will see what I mean, should you choose to go forth with it.
So what’s the catch Jon? Listen if it sounds to good to be true, than it probably is. WA is a business as well, and you cannot just dive in too get all the answers and not spend anything.
Anywhere you go, you are going to spend some money. I am actually grandfathered into my annual memeberhip, where it comes down to like $25 a month. I am loving it! I don’t know anywhere you can own and operate a business for $25 a month.
As I mentioned before, I had a brick and mortar business once, spending at least $1,000 a month on overhead.
What’s my earning potential and how long will it take me to make money?
There really is no cap on the earning potential. I know internet marketers making 6-7 figures a year online.
It takes time to earn money. It took me around six months to make my first sale. One of the main driving factors to earning money online is driving traffic.
You will need to drive a lot of traffic to your website, which you will learn how to do at WA, in order to generate revenue. As with ads; have you ever noticed those ads on your webpage as you are scrolling through your content? The ad provider is paying you to have those ads on your website.
However. you won’t get paid if no one is seeing those ads. Hence where the traffic is needed. Then with affiliate marketing option, you help different companies generate sales to receive commissions. Again, you will learn all of this at WA.
It took me about six months to get through all the training, and I became a professional, efficient, and proficient. You will too.
Sales started rolling in for me at the year mark. It’s hard to put a timeline on how much you will be earning and when because it really goes by how much work you put in.
You Are A Business Owner
One of the most important things to understand when it comes to operating a business online, is that it is still a business. Not different than any other business when it comes to how much work you will need to put in and earning money.
It’s not different because it is online. It’s easier because it’s online. It’s much more flexible. You will be in the comfort of your own home. But you it’s still the same in the sense that you will be starting from the ground up.
Why is it worth it? No matter how you look at it, you will be doing something in the next 5 years. You have an opportunity to grab the bull by it’s horns.
Making a decision here, will pave the road for you ahead. If you do nothing, accept that you will have nothing. You can spend the next five years dibbing and dabbing into different things. Trying new things, different things, until you find what tickles your fancy. Chance are, you won’t, and will have wasted those five years.
Take the reigns, start your online business.
What if I don’t like to write, or create content?
Then I would say, you are not getting it. I am not asking you to become a writer, or to write a novel. I am simply asking you to put into print a conversation. That’s what we’re doing here. Having a conversation.
Have you ever told a friend, family member, or a co-worker about a certain product that you thought was valuable. That’s it! You already do it naturally, but with a website you can reach a whole lot more people. You just to write it down, or record it.
The whole idea is this. you choose something you’re passionate about, you build a website about it, you generate traffic, then generate revenue. That’s all it is in a nutshell.

I agree with content creation as a career. More and more people are turning to the Internet for information, so if you can share your knowledge with others, you can help them with their problem. I also use Wealthy Affiliate, as I found it offered the best value for the money. My niche is the personal finance niche and I love how I was able to easily create my website without the headaches I got trying to do everything myself without any support.
Thanks Alicia, I am glad you can agree with my article.
I love personal finance. I used to be a banker, and credit is my cup of tea. I also like the different products such as checkings, savings, and credit accounts.
I look forward to visiting your website! I love reading content about personal finance as well.
A Content Creator is a storyteller, like those of old. The better your story and the way people respond to it the better. As a Content Creator you are always looking for someone to tell your story to. You will develop the skills needed in the Information Age to get your content viewed, liked, shared and purchased. The more content you write the sharper your skills become.
You will find different ways to engage your audience to get their response. Some will like and follow you for additional stories. They in turn will suggest to others to check out your content if it was helpful.
Jerry
Man, that is very insightful! Thanks Jerry. I have not thought of it as that, but that it is. I can tell by the Content Creators that I have followed. Some I have followed for years! And as you said, even referred to others.
That’s very interesting. I have also noticed my content or words have become sharper over the years. It’s interested to notice one’s growth. I love the idea that my website will record all of it, and that I will be able to look back at content I wrote years ago, in the future.
